The Marketing Problem Most Business Owners Get Wrong

I sat down with a business owner a while back who had a marketing calendar full for the next two months. Posts scheduled every day, paid ads running, emails going out weekly, podcast she'd started... On paper it looked like a lot of marketing, but she couldn’t actually tell if it was bringing in clients.

This happens more than you'd think. Most of the time it’s because nobody ever stopped to ask what any of it was actually for.

Marketing advice tends to push in one direction: add something.

  • Post everyday, sometimes multiple times a day

  • Try the new “popular” platform everyone's talking about

  • Get on the next trend before it's too late.

Follow that advice long enough and you end up with a full calendar and you still can't tell where your next client is coming from.

I work with owners the opposite way. Before I add anything, I want to know what's already happening and whether it's working. Most of the time, a business doesn't have a lead problem, they just need more clarity. Three or four things are quietly doing the work, and the rest is noise the owner has been too busy to question.

Once that's clear, the job gets simpler. Cut what isn't earning its place and put real effort behind what is. Stop treating every new tactic like it's required just because it exists.

A full calendar isn't a strategy. A clear answer to what's actually moving your business is. Most owners already have more marketing than they need. What they're missing is someone willing to tell them what to stop doing.
